Chelsea news: Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was awarded Player of the Match in the Champions League final after a string of world class saves against Liverpool
Former Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois made nine saves from 24 shots in an inspired performance against Liverpool as Real Madrid claimed their 14th Champions League title. Vinicius Jr scored the only goal of the game in Paris to see off Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Los Blancos defeated the Reds 1-0 as they went on to secure a surprise result against England’s domestic cup double-winning side. It was not straightforward, however, as Courtois‘ performance kept Liverpool at bay for the entire 90 minutes.
Now the former Chelsea goalkeeper has demanded respect from fans all over the world – especially those from his former club – as he believes he is underrated by those in England. Courtois was never regarded highly by the majority of Chelsea supporters and is often derided on his return to England with Real.
“I saw a lot of tweets coming my way today saying that I will be humbled, but I think it was the other way around,” he said live on BT Sport after the game. ”Today I needed to win a final for my career, for all the hard work – to put respect on my name because I don’t think I have a lot of respect in England.”
Winning Europe’s most elite competition is a huge step for Courtois. The Belgian has added Europe’s most prestigious trophy to his already huge collection and at 30 years old, there’s plenty of time for the goalkeeper to add more silverware to his arsenal.
