Reasons Behind Omeruo’s Support for George as Super Eagles Coach.

Reasons Behind Omeruo's Support for George as Super Eagles Coach.
  • George is the Nigeria interim coach
  • A substantive coach is being hunted for
  • Omeruo backs George for the top job

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The ex-Nigeria winger is currently the Super Eagles caretaker trainer following the departure of Jose Peseiro.

He got the chance to impress for a substantive role when he took charge of international friendly matches against Ghana and Mali.

Nigeria edged the Black Stars 2-1 before being beaten 2-0 by Mali but defender Kenneth Omeruo backs George to take over permanently.

    WHAT OMERUO SAID

“One difference is he wants us to play good football and I like that,” Omeruo told BBC Sport Africa.

“I actually think he knows what he is doing, and he deserves to be given the job.

“The training programs were very good and players were giving 100 per cent in training,” added the 30-year-old defender.

“I think we played very good football [in the] second half [against Mali]. We weren’t waiting to be attacked. If we converted our chances, we could have done the job.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

George is one of the reported 20 candidates who have applied for the Nigeria job.

The other candidates whose CBVs are being perused by the Nigeria Football Federation include Emmanuel Amuneke, Ndubuisi Egbo, Michael Nsien and Portuguese Toni Conceicao, who guided Cameroon to a bronze medal at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

    WHAT NEXT FOR GEORGE?

The next few weeks would be crucial for George to know if his application will be considered ahead of others.

The NFF would want to appoint the new substantive coach in time for him to adequately prepare for June’s 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Bafana Bafana and Benin.
