Chelsea requires a defensive midfielder, which is a key position for this summer, second only to the striker in terms of significance to the squad.
Signing a man who is happy to sit at the base of the midfield and block up rival attacks will greatly benefit our defense and allow us to redeploy talents like Enzo Fernandez and N’Golo Kante higher up the game where they can inflict more harm.
Manual Ugarte, the combative central midfielder who has excelled for Sporting in Portugal, and always does a fantastic job scouting the best young talents, appears to be near the top of our list.
But things aren’t that straightforward, and with the summer window still open, the reliable Portuguese newspaper Record claims that Ugarte is close to joining PSG. The Parisians are said to have made a €60 million proposal, which fulfills Sporting’s release clause.
Chelsea could do the same thing right now if they so desired. But would Ugarte prefer mayhem in London outside of the Champions League with a new manager? Things are not wholly dissimilar at PSG, but it appears to be a more comfortable environment to enter.
If this transaction goes through swiftly, we may have to eliminate a highly skilled player from our summer plans.
