Chelsea sacrificing a £40 million star this summer may be the correct thing to do in the face of Premier League rivalry.
According to journalist Paul Brown, Chelsea sacrificing Mateo Kovacic this summer may be the appropriate thing to do.
The Blues need to sell players after spending so much money in the last two transfer windows, and the midfielder is one of the players garnering interest from rival clubs.

Chelsea deal for £30m star now ‘Pochettino’s dream’ at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea is expected to lose Kovacic after the season, according to The Guardian.
According to the same source, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Bayern Munich are all interested in the 29-year-old.
He joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in a £40 million transfer over four years ago, according to BBC Sport, following a successful loan spell at Stamford Bridge.
However, the Croatian appears to be on the verge of being sold, with the Evening Standard suggesting that a fire sale at Chelsea this summer is possible as the club seeks to comply with Financial Fair Play requirements after spending so much in the previous two transfer windows.
What did Paul Brown have to say about Mateo Kovacic and Chelsea?
Brown believes that the time has come for Chelsea, who are expected to sign Mauricio Pochettino as manager, to let Kovacic leave.
“I don’t think that would be a bad thing if Kovacic is one of the ones sacrificed or who wants to leave, because he’s one of the older players and may not have three, four, or five years at the top at Chelsea,” the journalist told GIVEMESPORT. That would not be a major issue for either party, in my opinion. It may even be the moral thing to do.”
Who else might Chelsea give up this summer?
Kovai will not be the only departure from Stamford Bridge due to the club’s desire to raise finances.
Mason Mount is one player who might follow the Croatia international out the door due to his contract issue.
Todd Boehly may be compelled to sell the attacking midfielder immediately because his current contract expires next year. According to The Athletic, the club would seek a £70 million fee for him, so it could be a nice opportunity to bring in some cash to help with their FFP situation.

Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, like Mount, will be free agents in 2024, so they’re likely to leave Stamford Bridge this summer as well.
Chelsea still has time to extend contracts, but it’s evident that they need to sell certain players before the end of the season, so it appears like Kovai and a few others will be departing the Premier League club shortly.
