Peter Obi supports the Tinubu administration’s decision to increase electricity tariffs.

Cybersecurity levy: Tinubu govt only interested in milking a dying economy – Peter Obi

The Labour Party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration regarding a new increase in electricity tariffs.

On Sunday, Obi expressed support for raising electricity tariffs specifically for wealthier consumers. This stance comes in the wake of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s recent approval of a tariff hike for Band A customers.

Obi argued that such a measure could address Nigeria’s electricity challenges, emphasizing that it’s reasonable to increase tariffs for urban areas with higher affordability.

He suggested a straightforward solution: adjusting tariffs based on the ability to pay. However, he also highlighted the importance of focusing on power generation to alleviate the prolonged electricity issues. Despite this, Obi acknowledged the plight of the majority of Nigerians, stating the necessity to assist those in less affluent areas to improve their living conditions and stimulate production.

In his view, supporting people in economically disadvantaged areas could uplift them from poverty by fostering production instead of mere consumption.
