The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, has confirmed the passing of Nollywood actor John Paul Odonwodo, popularly recognized as Junior Pope. The tragic incident occurred when the late actor and three companions were returning from a movie shoot in a boat and fell into Anam River in Anambra on Wednesday.
Taking to his Instagram page on Thursday, Rollas shared the heartbreaking news, expressing deep sadness over the loss. He recounted the efforts made by medical professionals at two prominent hospitals to revive Junior Pope, but unfortunately, their attempts were unsuccessful. Rollas acknowledged that despite initial signs of hope when Junior Pope’s fingers moved, they ultimately lost him, leaving them devastated.
Junior Pope ventured into the Nollywood industry in 2006, initially starting with minor roles in movies. His breakthrough came in 2007 with his notable performance in the blockbuster movie “Secret Adventures” directed by Tchidi Chikere. Over the years, he appeared in more than 150 Nollywood films, portraying diverse roles ranging from criminals to villains and hitmen, often alongside renowned actors such as Emma Ehumadu, Sylvester Madu, and Jim Iyke.
In recognition of his talent and contributions to the industry, Junior Pope received several awards, including the Nollywood Most Promising Actor in Nigeria at the Entertainment Factory Awards in 2010. He also won accolades such as Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards and Best Actor of the Year at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.
