The National Bureau of Statistics has reported a 46.88 percent year-on-year increase in the price of a 12.5 kilogram cylinder of Liquified Petroleum Gas, commonly known as cooking gas.
According to the February Liquified Cook Gas Price Watch, the price of a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas surged to N15,060.38 in February 2024 from N10,253.39 in the same month last year.
On a month-on-month basis, there was a 28.33 percent increase to N15,060.38 in February 2024 from N11,735.72 in the previous month.
Additionally, in February 2024, the cost of refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas rose to N6,154.50, marking a 19.75 percent increase from January 2023’s price of N5,139.25. Year-on-year, there was a 33.78 percent surge from N4,600.57 in February 2023.
In terms of state prices, Ogun recorded the highest average cost at N16,375.00, followed by Delta at N16,333.33 and Edo at N16,321.43. Conversely, Bauchi reported the lowest average price at N13,167.50, with Katsina and Yobe following closely at N13,562.50 and N13,610.00, respectively.
At the zonal level, the South-East had the highest average price for refilling a 12.5kg gas cylinder at N15,954.60, with the South-South nearly matching at N15,943.40. Meanwhile, the North-East had the lowest regional price at N14,035.88.
