Speaking to RMC Sport, a Real Madrid source has said that it is up to Kylian Mbappé (24) to make the first steps in initiating a transfer to the La Liga club.

Mbappé has been a long-term target for Real Madrid. It looked as though he would join the La Liga club in the summer of 2024, only to sign a new two-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain. The France captain was linked once again with a move to the Bernabeu last summer amidst a fractious relationship with PSG’s hierarchy, which eschewed from Mbappé’s refusal to trigger the one-year extension in his contract. His refusal to do so allows Mbappé to leave Les Parisiens on a free in the summer of 2024, something PSG were understandably desperate to avoid.

However, whilst there has been a sense of inevitability about Mbappé’s transfer to Real Madrid, Spanish media reported earlier in November that the La Liga club had abandoned their attempts to sign the France captain. RMC Sport believes that this story, leaked to Cadena SER, is a means to preserve Real Madrid’s image. Los Blancos are therefore only feigning disinterest in the PSG forward.

A Real Madrid source has now told RMC Sport that it is up to Mbappé himself to make the first steps. “If Mbappé wants to come, he has to do the work,” said the source. Real Madrid want to “avoid being a laughing stock” should Mbappé decide to extend his contract at PSG, as he did in 2022.
