The Chevening LSE Fellowship 2025/2026 offers a unique platform for mid-career professionals in China to delve deep into research and enhance their expertise. Hosted by the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, the fellowship is a testament to the UK’s commitment to fostering global talent and intellectual exchange.
Program Structure and Focus
Successful applicants are afforded the privilege of spending three, six, or nine months immersed in the vibrant academic environment of LSE, working on a meticulously defined research project aligned with their interests. Under the guidance of a dedicated LSE advisor, fellows are expected to produce a comprehensive research paper that will be presented at the conclusion of their fellowship. Beyond research, fellows have the opportunity to audit lectures and participate in seminars, enriching their academic experience.
The fellowship prioritizes candidates with a strong background in the social sciences, particularly international relations, public policy, public diplomacy, social, economic, and environmental policy, and development issues. A well-articulated research proposal is essential for a successful application.

Eligibility Criteria
General Requirements
- Nationality and Residency: Must be a citizen of China currently residing in the country.
- Return Intent: Applicants must demonstrate a clear intention to return to China upon completion of the fellowship.
- Academic Qualifications: Hold a postgraduate degree or possess equivalent professional experience in a relevant field.
- Professional Experience: Possess a minimum of five years of substantial and relevant work experience, or be a currently enrolled PhD candidate (excluding UK, EU, and US universities).
- Dual Nationality: Must not hold dual British nationality (exceptions apply as outlined in the Chevening Guidance for Applicants).
Employment Restrictions
- Government Employment: Cannot be a current or former employee, or a relative* of an employee of the UK government or affiliated organizations (including the British Council, UK universities, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities).
- Previous Scholarship Holders: Individuals who have previously received a UK government-funded scholarship or fellowship are eligible to apply after a five-year gap and must demonstrate career progression since the previous award.
- Chevening Partner Organizations: Employees, former employees, or relatives* of Chevening Partner organizations can apply, but cannot receive an award from the same organization within two years of employment.
*Relatives include parents, siblings, children, spouse, civil partner, or unmarried partner in a relationship equivalent to marriage or civil partnership for at least two years.
Note: Applicants must agree to adhere to all program guidelines and expectations.
Application Procedure
The application window is open and will be closed on November 5th, 2024. The selection process is rigorous, involving initial eligibility checks, followed by a thorough evaluation of research proposals by independent reading committees. Shortlisted candidates are invited for interviews, and final decisions are announced in May 2025.
