Kai Havertz has selected Mateo Kovacic the most skilled player at Chelsea and given special mentions to both Joao Felix and Hakim Ziyech.
Key Chelsea player back in training after injury, plus youngster hoping for start
Blues forward Kai Havertz, who’s the club’s leading scorer this season with nine goals, has been debating Chelsea’s most skilled players on The 5th Stand app.
It’s fascinating to hear him label Mateo Kovacic as “the best technically” of all his teammates at Stamford Bridge. The 29-year-old midfielder rarely uses his flair in games, though.
When asked the most skillful at Chelsea, Havertz said: “The best technically Mateo Kovacic, but I suppose he doesn’t use many skills in-game. That is Joao Felix, I’d think. Hakim Ziyech is the one that always tries to nutmeg.”
Kovacic can be highly successful when he splits lines with his dribbling, but it’s fair to say we don’t see enough of it from him.
The Croatian midfielder is incredibly skilled and has had a wonderful career to date. However, he might leave you wanting more at times given his innate talent.
He should love hearing appreciation from his colleagues as above, though. In addition, Blues youngster Omari Hutchison has enthused about Kovacic’s ability only a couple of months ago.
There’s been plenty of conjecture recently concerning the future of Kovacic, who’s got just one more year left on his deal.
The Evening Standard said last month that Chelsea won’t stand in Kovacic’s way this summer if he wants to leave Stamford Bridge.
We still think he can bring a lot to this Blues squad, but let’s see what the next permanent manager thinks of his condition.

He may go from excellent to ineffectual on a game-to-game basis, so it’s quite tough to assess what to do with him.
