Benefits
Each of the 50 scholarships available provides the following support during the 3.5 years of study:
Financial Support:
- Full tuition fees:Â The scholarship will fully cover your tuition costs for the duration of your program.
- Stipend: You will receive a generous stipend of £25,224 per annum (2024/25 rate) to help cover your living expenses.
- Consumables fund: An additional £2,000 per annum will be provided for the first 3 years of study to assist with the purchase of necessary materials and supplies.

Eligibility Criteria
General Eligibility:
- Academic Excellence:Â Candidates must demonstrate exceptional academic performance, typically with a first-class or equivalent undergraduate or integrated Master’s degree, or a distinction in a standalone Master’s qualification.
- Research Potential:Â The scholarship is awarded to candidates who show promising research potential.
- Global Reach:Â Applications are welcome from talented individuals from Imperial College London, the UK, and worldwide, regardless of nationality.
Alternate Pathways:
- Non-Traditional Pathways:Â Candidates with non-traditional academic or career backgrounds who possess exceptional research potential can also apply through the Alternate Pathways route.\

- New PhD Applications:Â The scholarship is only available to new PhD applicants; current Imperial PhD students are not eligible.
- Full or Part-Time Study:Â The scholarship applies to both full-time and part-time PhD programs.
- Departmental Restrictions:Â Some departments may not be able to support international candidates, so it’s advisable to check with the specific department of interest.

Application Procedure
Before You Apply:
- Find a Supervisor:Â Identify a potential supervisor within an Imperial College London department who is willing to oversee your research project. Please note that supervisors can only supervise one scholar at a time.
- Check Supervisor Availability:Â Review the “President’s PhD Scholarships – Unavailable Supervisors” page for more information on supervisors who are currently occupied.
Application Process:
- Online Application: Submit your application for admission to Imperial College London through the online admissions system. Your department will then consider you for the scholarship based on your academic merit and potential.
- Scholarship-Specific Instructions:Â Follow the additional admissions instructions provided for the scholarship, which may include specific requirements for your personal statement and research proposal.
Additional Admissions Instructions:
- Start Dates:Â Funded places for the 2025-26 academic year start between August 1st and November 1st, 2025.
- Personal Statement:Â Include a 2-page personal statement and research proposal in your application. The first page should outline your motivations for applying to Imperial and the scholarship, while the second page should detail your research proposal. You may submit updated versions of these documents if your department shortlists you for the scholarship.
- Academic References: Provide the names of two academic referees who can support your application. These should be individuals who can provide an academic reference, such as your personal tutor or thesis supervisor. Avoid including your proposed PhD supervisor.
- Scholarship Selection:Â Indicate your interest in the President’s PhD Scholarship by selecting the corresponding option in the funding section of the online application form.
Review and Selection:
- Two-Stage Process:Â Applications will be reviewed in two stages:
- Departmental Review:Â Candidates meeting the eligibility criteria will be reviewed by their chosen department. Shortlisted candidates will be presented to the College Selection Panel.
- College Selection Panel:Â The final decision will be made by the College Selection Panel, consisting of the Vice-Provost (Research), Director of the Graduate School, and Faculty Vice-Deans for Research.
Assessment Criteria:
- Academic Excellence:Â Candidates will be assessed based on their past academic results, transcripts, relative class position, awards, and distinctions.
- Research Potential:Â The candidate’s research experience, interest in discovery, research plan, and potential contribution as described in their research proposal will be evaluated.
Successful Candidates:
- Confirmation:Â Successful candidates will receive written confirmation of their scholarship offer.
- Conditional Offer:Â The offer may be conditional upon the candidate receiving their predicted qualifications.
- Standard PhD:Â Applicants not selected for the scholarship will automatically be considered for a standard PhD.
Notification Timeline:
- November 4th, 2024:Â Applicants who apply by this date will be notified by the end of January 2025.
- January 9th, 2025:Â Applicants who apply by this date will be notified by the end of March 2025.
- March 10th, 2025:Â Applicants who apply by this date will be notified by the end of May 2025.
