Thiago Silva suggests he would sign another Chelsea contract to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge.
Silva, 37, has just finished a truly exceptional individual year during the 2021/22 season.
The veteran Brazilian defender ended up with 48 appearances across all competitions this campaign for Chelsea, which included the Premier League final day 2-1 victory at home to Watford.
Despite his age, he’s been one of the most consistent and trusted players under Blues manager Thomas Tuchel.
Silva would sign another Chelsea contract
Silva’s now made some eye-catching comments that suggest he’d be open to extending his deal again at the Bridge.
The top-class centre-half signed a contract extension with the club as recently as January, which keeps him in west London until the end of next season.
He’s now completed two brilliant seasons as a Chelsea player and is signed on for next year, but he’s not completely ruled out adding a fourth campaign.
“It’s strange. You come for one season and you don’t know what’s going to happen because people look at you and maybe have a few doubts because of your age,” Silva said in Chelsea’s official matchday programme before the Watford game, as quoted by Goal.
“I was happy to accept for a second season and now a third – and who knows, maybe even a fourth after that! I’m happy here, my family is happy and that helps a lot because when I go outside of the pitch, it can only go well as well. I feel good in London. I feel at home.”
So vital next season
It already looks like the Blues are going to be relying heavily on Silva once more next season, albeit they must be more careful with his minutes as he continues to get older. Tuchel has recently acknowledged that age will eventually catch up with even Silva.
It feels like the Blues will really need him as the reliable figure at the back while the new defence is restructured without exit-bound Antonio Rudiger.
If Chelsea decide to invest in a youngster such as loanee Levi Colwill, the presence and guidance of Silva will be invaluable.
