BREAKING: Emefiele granted N300m bail in fresh criminal trial

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has lodged a fresh 26-count indictment relating to abuse of power and corruption against Mr. Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Emefiele is scheduled to appear before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos High Court, Ikeja, on Monday, April 8. The charges encompass various offenses such as accepting gratifications, receiving gifts via intermediaries, corruption, obtaining fraudulently acquired property, and providing corrupt advantages to his associates, all in violation of the Corrupt Practices Act of 2000.

As reported by Channels Television, these new accusations were formally submitted on April 3 by the EFCC Prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.

One of the primary charges states: “Between 2022 and 2023, in Lagos, you, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, abused your authority as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria by unilaterally authorizing the allocation of foreign exchange amounting to $2,136,391,737.33 (two billion, one hundred and thirty-six million, three hundred and ninety-one thousand, seven hundred and thirty-seven dollars, and thirty-three cents) without competitive bids, thereby prejudicing the rights of Nigerian citizens.”
