The Edo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to motorists, advising them to disregard passengers who often goad them into overspeeding under the pretext of urgency.
Paul Okpe, the FRSC State Sector Commander, emphasized that such passengers significantly contribute to road accidents and should be ignored. This counsel was dispensed during a road show organized as part of efforts to sensitize road users about the importance of prioritizing safety on the roads.
Okpe urged motorists and other road users to adhere to traffic regulations, particularly during the Easter festivities, to ensure their safety. Recognizing the prevalent recklessness among drivers in the state, he stressed the paramount importance of staying alive to partake in celebrations.
“Before commencing any journey during this period, it is imperative to thoroughly inspect your vehicle, ensuring that brakes, lights, fire extinguishers, tires, and other essentials are in optimal condition,” Okpe advised. “While driving, strict adherence to traffic rules—including wearing seatbelts, avoiding overloading, speeding, reckless driving, and respecting routes—is crucial. Celebrations are best enjoyed with loved ones when everyone remains safe.”
He emphasized the need for motorists to maintain moderate speeds and exhibit respect for fellow road users, highlighting that only the living can truly rejoice during the season.
To guarantee a smooth celebration, Okpe disclosed plans to deploy FRSC personnel across the state. He also appealed to stakeholders to collaborate with FRSC in reducing road accidents, particularly during festive periods, to ensure travelers’ safe arrival at their destinations.
