Donald Trump’s Litigious Legacy: A Dive into Lawsuits and Media Battles.

Donald Trump's Litigious Legacy: A Dive into Lawsuits and Media Battles.

If Donald Trump were awarded Starbucks loyalty points for each lawsuit filed or filed against him, he’d accumulate enough to fill a backyard pool with free pumpkin spice lattes. Likewise, if he earned points for every lawsuit aimed at the press, such as his recent defamation suit against ABC News and host George Stephanopoulos for alleging him as a rapist, he’d be well on his way to topping off a kiddie pool.

While Trump has a penchant for legal skirmishes, particularly against the media, his success rate in these lawsuits is notably low. Despite this, he persists in pursuing litigation, prompting speculation about his motivations.

Trump’s litigious tendencies have been attributed to various factors, including a desire for control, intimidation, and a penchant for settling scores. Former federal prosecutor James D. Zirin suggests that Trump sees litigation as a means of exerting dominance and silencing critics.

Drawing from the playbook of his former attorney, Roy Cohn, Trump employs a strategy of counterattack, undermining adversaries, and manipulating the press. Libel suits, in particular, serve as a tool to deter negative coverage and shape the narrative in his favor.

However, media attorney Theodore J. Boutrous Jr. criticizes Trump’s lawsuits as an abuse of the judicial system, aimed at stifling press freedom and bolstering his political image.

Despite occasional victories, such as his successful dismissal of a lawsuit against Bloomberg Opinion’s Timothy L. O’Brien, Trump’s legal actions often fail to achieve their intended effect. Moreover, they risk drawing further attention to unfavorable allegations.

Trump’s recent lawsuit against ABC News and Stephanopoulos faces legal challenges and public scrutiny. While it may keep the issue in the spotlight, it’s uncertain whether it will change public opinion in his favor.

In the end, Trump’s legal battles may deepen the metaphorical “kiddie pool” of litigation, but without stronger cases, his chances of success remain uncertain.
