We’re coming to the end of the season in leagues around the world, and it’s awards time for many of them.
At Coventry – who have had a rare impressive campaign – a Chelsea loanee was picked as their young player of the season.
That’s no mean feat – clubs don’t tend to pick loan players for awards like this unless they’ve really been exceptional, and Ian Maatsen has been just that.
The left back made a full 42 appearances for the Sky Blues, showing despite his small stature he’s got what it takes to play in a really tough and physical division.
Given how desperate Chelsea are for a back up left back, and given that Thomas Tuchel has largely been happy to give young players a chance in preseason, it’s easy to see a situation where Maatsen is in the first team squad next season backing up Ben Chilwell.
We would love to see that…
