Chelsea are interested in signing Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid this summer, either permanently or on a loan basis.
After learning that Atletico Madrid is interested in acquiring Marc Cucurella and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this summer, Chelsea has allegedly reached out to them to discuss the possibility of a swap move for Joao Felix. The Blues are willing to bring the Portuguese striker back to Stamford Bridge after the season when he is set to return to the Wanda Metropolitano following six months in west London.
Felix has had a poor season in the Premier League since joining on loan from Chelsea in January. He earned a straight red card on his Chelsea debut in the 2-1 defeat at Fulham in January after lunging at Kenny Tete.
Before his expulsion after serving his three-match ban, the Portugal international was a mainstay under Graham Potter, but the 23-year-old has now lost his position in the squad with the hiring of interim manager Frank Lampard.
Nonetheless, there is always hope Felix may live up to his potential at Stamford Bridge under Mauricio Pochettino, who appears to be on the verge of being announced as the club’s next manager, with an agreement nearing completion.
Pochettino is known for his offensive style of play, and he formed his core around young players during his time at Tottenham.
That is why, despite Felix’s three goals in 13 Premier League appearances, Chelsea is not ready to give up on him.
Chelsea will have to unload players to reach a deal with Atletico, who are unwilling to lower their asking price of £88 million for Felix.
Atletico Madrid is hesitant to take a significant risk on their young attacker, whom they purchased for £113 million as a teenager from Benfica in 2019.
According to The Evening Standard, Atletico Madrid is seeking roughly £88 million to agree to a full sale, which might prevent Chelsea from a permanent purchase.
The Blues must exercise caution after being placed on the Financial Fair Play radar following a £121 million deficit.
Todd Boehly has overspent on signings in the last two transfer windows, spending over £600 million on transactions, forcing him to prioritize player sales.
Fortunately, Chelsea has a large number of periphery players in their team who may be sold for significant sums of money, so they should have no trouble raising funds to spend this summer.
Despite only joining the club this summer, Aubameyang and Cucurella are two of the players who might be forced out.
Aubameyang arrived from Barcelona in the closing days of the summer transfer window, while Cucurella arrived from Brighton for £63 million after an outstanding debut season in the Premier League.
Todd Boehly has already held Neymar transfer meeting with Paris Saint-Germain amid Chelsea links
He has since struggled to recreate the form he demonstrated on the South Coast in west London, where he has been unable to win over fans.
Cucurella has looked weak defensively and has struggled to show the attacking potential that drew Chelsea to sign him last summer.
Meanwhile, Aubameyang is said to want to return to Barcelona after visiting the club recently during one of his brief holidays from Chelsea.
