Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ben Chilwell: Latest Chelsea injury news ahead of Southampton clash
Thomas Tuchel has close to a full squad to pick from for Saturday’s game with Southampton following the loss to Real Madrid
Chelsea have made a tough return from the international break this week, losing back-to-back matches against Brentford and Real Madrid. The Blues conceded seven goals across the two games, looking uncharacteristically poor at the back as a Karim Benzema hat-trick sunk the team on Wednesday night.
Thomas Tuchel gave his verdict shortly after the match, telling BT Sport: “It’s a heavy loss. It’s one of the worst first-halves I’ve seen from us here at Stamford Bridge. First-half was so far from any standards we set ourselves, so we cannot complain when we lose.”
The German coach will now be looking for his side to respond when they face Southampton on Saturday, needing three points to get back to winning ways. Luckily for him, his Chelsea squad came out unscathed and without injuries from the match with Los Blancos.
Opposite number Ralph Hasenhuttl has claimed that it is a good time to be facing Chelsea, saying: “In the first half the way Chelsea played isn’t good enough for the Champions League, Thomas knows this. The team also looked like they were affected by the home loss to Brentford, you could feel it, (they were) not so confident with everything they do.
“It is a good thing to see that the big teams are struggling sometimes – the bad thing is that this doesn’t happen very often.” While Tuchel has made no direct comment on how his squad are injury-wise, football.london brings you what we understand the only two injury worries are ahead of this one.
Chilwell suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his knee that is set to keep the wing-back out for the rest of the season. The 25-year-old performed well in the early stages of the season but won’t make a return until the summer. Alongside Callum Hudson-Odoi, the left-back was the only other absentee from the clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday.
Hudson-Odoi managed just one appearance in February as he struggled with a troublesome Achilles issue. No risks have been taken with the academy graduate – hardly a surprise as a ruptured Achilles tendon derailed his rapid development in 2019.
He wasn’t involved in the match at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday and his return is currently unknown.
