Bottlers? Gabriel gobbles up Haaland as Arsenal show mettle

Arsenal finally ended their Etihad Stadium hoodoo as they produced a resilient display to frustrate Manchester City and earn a 0-0 draw. The result saw Mikel Arteta’s side miss out on the chance to return to top spot in the Premier League following Liverpool’s win over Brighton earlier in the afternoon, but the Arsenal boss will be delighted by the performance his side produced at a ground where they had failed to earn a single point since 2016.

Gabriel Magalhaes was superb as the visitors completely shut out City, who had last failed to score a goal at home in the league way back in October 2021.

EPRODITY rates Arsenal’s players from the Etihad Stadium…

Goalkeeper & Defense
David Raya (6/10):

Initially appeared slightly jittery and struggled with footing when clearing the ball, leading to a few errors. However, managed to block Ake’s close-range header effectively.

Ben White (8/10):

Posed problems for City when venturing forward on rare occasions down the right flank. Instrumental in creating two first-half chances for Jesus. A commendable performance overall.

William Saliba (8/10):

Showed signs of nerves early on, often taking an extra touch unnecessarily. However, significantly improved after halftime to form a solid defensive partnership with Gabriel, effectively neutralizing Haaland.

Gabriel Magalhaes (8/10):

Performed admirably against Haaland, demonstrating resilience in the physical battles. Impressive display throughout.

Jakub Kiwior (5/10):

Struggled against Bernardo’s runs, with City seemingly targeting him. A challenging outing for the makeshift left-back.

Jorginho (6/10):

Played a tidy and supportive role, aiding in defensive duties. Executed his responsibilities effectively, although had limited involvement in ball possession.

Declan Rice (7/10):

Engaged in a compelling midfield duel with Rodri, showcasing his value to City’s midfield setup.

Martin Odegaard (6/10):

Maintained composure under pressure and pressed when possible. However, failed to create significant attacking opportunities against City.

Bukayo Saka (4/10):

Struggled to make an impact and appeared unfit. Produced one threatening cross in the second half but lacked sharpness.

Kai Havertz (6/10):

Led the attacking line adeptly and posed problems with his physical presence, despite limited opportunities on the ball.

Gabriel Jesus (6/10):

Displayed a mix of liveliness and frustration, remaining actively involved in the game. However, lacked precision with two first-half attempts.

Subs & Manager
Thomas Partey (5/10):

Replaced Jorginho but appeared sluggish at times, lacking sharpness.

Takehiro Tomiyasu (5/10):

Introduced to contain Doku in the second half, fulfilled defensive duties adequately but had lapses in passing accuracy.

Leandro Trossard (5/10):

Displayed skill to evade Doku but had limited impact otherwise. Had one late chance saved.

Gabriel Martinelli (N/A):

Had minimal involvement in the game.

Mikel Arteta (6/10):

Pleased with his team’s resilience but will be concerned about Saka’s fitness. Decision to risk him after injury did not pay off, hoping it doesn’t worsen the situation.
