Atiku criticizes Tinubu’s electricity tariff hike reforms as lacking empathy.

Atiku criticizes Tinubu's electricity tariff hike reforms as lacking empathy.

Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed concerns over the recent increase in electricity tariffs, emphasizing that it would exacerbate hardships for Nigerians.

In a post on X, Atiku criticized the Federal Government for implementing reforms without sufficient notice or a comprehensive plan to alleviate the resulting difficulties.

He stated: “The timing of the electricity tariff hike coincides with a period when Nigerian citizens are already facing severe challenges due to the removal of fuel subsidies and the depreciation of the domestic currency.”

“At a time when the government has yet to adequately address the hardships stemming from these measures, the sudden increase in electricity tariffs will further burden citizens, exacerbating inflationary pressures. This will have a detrimental effect on our manufacturing sector, which is already grappling with higher interest rates, increased costs of diesel, and elevated wage expenses following the implementation of the new minimum wage.”

Atiku criticized the government’s approach, asserting that its reforms lack empathy and risk plunging the economy into deeper crisis. He emphasized the need to address the underlying inefficiencies in the power sector before embarking on further reforms, suggesting a reassessment of the privatization process that led to the establishment of the Distribution Companies (DISCOs).

Moreover, Atiku outlined steps that Tinubu, presumably referring to a political figure, should take in response to the tariff hike. These include sequencing the reforms, implementing measures to mitigate the impact on citizens, and holding the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) accountable for enhancing service delivery.
