On Wednesday, it was reported that Dani Alves had been set bail for the first time since being arrested on sexual assault charges back in January 2023. The former Barcelona and Sevilla defender – who was convicted, but has since appealed – has asked for it on no less than three occasions, but this is the first time that it has been granted.
The problem for Alves is that he himself cannot afford to pay €1m to orchestrate his temporary release from prison. It was revealed during his trial that he is broke, although he did later net €150k over a previous case which he won. Still, it’s not enough to cover the costs.
As such, he has appealed to the father of Neymar Junior, who helped him pay a compensation fee to his alleged victim before his trial started earlier this year. However, as La Vanguardia have reported, the money hasn’t been paid yet, meaning that Alves has remained in prison for at least another 24 hours.
It’s not yet known when Alves’ appeal will be heard. It could be a while yet, meaning that he is out of prison for a considerable amount of time – provided that his bail is triggered.
